Guardian Angels

Last Time:

Christmastime is supposed to be a joyous occasion. But, a winter snow storm will put the Angels and the rest of the precinct with a skeleton crew. But, because of the lack of two of their members, Saipia took her team to help out at a homeless shelter. There, she met up with Erica's sister, Bella Martin. Bella revealed that Liv Aston is the second Genoid ever created.

The Angels helping out at the shelter turned out to be a double blessing, as Mayor Ashley, in a fit of rage over the Genoids' Christmas spirit, abused her slaves. Three of them left the mayor and reported their abuse to Liv and six more were eventually admitted to the Genoid hospital where Gjai works. Unfortunately for Ashley, Gjai decided to release them to Liv, due to the extent of their injuries.

Episode 8 : "Patrol"

Saipia Jones ran the horse hair brush through the fur of her tail as she thought about that day's tasks. It was department policy for all officers to perform patrols at least two weeks out of the year regardless of rank or team. Saipia was eager to get her patrol duty out of the way, and had scheduled herself for patrols for the next two weeks. While she was on her required duties, James would be leading the Angels. They would be in good hands.

The commander's anxiety about the patrols bugged her. To tell the truth, she rather enjoyed the duty, but the fear of revealing her secrets to the world always kept her on edge. Secrets that would rewrite history if they were ever discovered. Secrets that haunted her constantly. Her body constantly ached to remind her of a past she wished she could forget, and often wondered why she couldn't. By every logical part of her mind, Saipia reasoned that she should have no recollection of the vast majority of her past, but, some part of her was still eager to hold onto those memories.

The young wolf took great pride in keeping her tail nice and smooth. Brushing it diligently every morning kept stray hairs from clinging to her uniform, and made her look a lot more presentable.

She also made sure to give her mane some attention, as well. Gjai, Sai's sister, watched her with a slight laugh. "What's so funny?" the blue-dyed wolf asked.

"You. Sitting there brushing your fur while your off in a completely different world. What are you always thinking about when you're doing that, anyway?" asked the white wolf.

Saipia didn't answer, but simply frowned towards the older canine and returned to her thoughts. Gjai understood what that meant and didn't press the issue any further. "Well, you better get going to work. And, if you're not too busy for lunch, why don't you swing by the hospital and pick me up. It's been a while since we've had lunch together during work hours."

The blue wolf nodded, simply before glancing at the clock and realizing that it was time for her to get to the precinct. Saipia usually wore her uniform to work, and that day was so exception. Although, regulations said that she had to wear a skirt while doing patrols, she only followed that rule once. Now, she always wore pants. She knew she'd probably get chewed out for it today by her patrol partner, but, she didn't care.

With a sigh, Saipia put her brush away and grabbed her keys from the edge of her dresser. She then grabbed her coat off the hook next to the door to the garage and headed out to her car. Pausing a moment, she re-entered the house to grab her wallet, badge and gun before finally entering the garage again and getting into her car. Saipia always parked in the driveway just outside the garage. Gjai often got home before she did, and Saipia was usually the first to leave in the morning, so it just made since for her to park there. The little Korean car hummed to life and Saipia backed out of the driveway and headed towards the station.

Her house was relatively close to the boarder between the Genoid Town and the human side of the city. Sai had been secretly looking for houses on the human side, but she knew it would be very difficult to get one. She mainly hated driving all the way to work, which was on the other side of the city from her home. This was true for most Genoids, and everyone was thankful that they were at least allowed to have driver's licenses. But, Saipia figured that was only because the only other option would be to allow them to have human servants, and the humans certainly didn't want that.

As usual, traffic was horrid, even on the city streets that Saipia usually took. The wolf was shocked when she was stopped at the Genoid - human boarder and inspected. "Miss, please step out of your car," ordered a human army officer.

"Miss? Did you not see this star on my shoulder?" Saipia snapped, as she got out of her car.

The MP glanced at another soldier who was standing nearby with a long pole with a mirror duct taped to the end of it. "But, you're a civilian..."

"I don't give a rat's ass if I'm a civilian cop or not. I still out rank you, soldier!" bellowed the officer.

"She's got a point, Winston. Better not piss the bitch off," the other soldier commented.

Saipia was greatly offended by the way she was being treated, and the wolfish growl that escaped her lips instantly informed the two humans of that fact. Luckily, before anyone could get themselves hurt, the soldier's commanding officer stepped out of his Humvee and approached the scene. "What the hell is going on over here?"

"These two bastards decided it would be fun to disrespect a superior officer," Saipia said quickly.

The military man glanced at the star on Saipia's soldier and quickly recognized the Genoid. "You idiots, that's Commander Saipia Jones. Hell, she's pretty much out ranks me, as far as I'm concerned. Don't waste her time and anymore braincells than you have to. Let her go."

"But, sir, Captain said..." started the first soldier.

"Did I ask what the captain said? I said let her through, soldier. Unless you'd rather be a private, I suggest you do what I told you," the older human barked.

Wordlessly, the soldiers saluted the officer and allowed Saipia to get back in her car. An apologetic look from the army Commander reassured the Genoid officer. "And salute her, dammit!" bellowed the man and the two guys snapped a quick salute to Saipia as she sped away from the checkpoint.

Saipia's anger got the best of her, as she pushed her little foreign car past the posted speed limit. Soon, there were flashing lights in her mirror, causing her to kick herself. With a calming sigh, she pulled over and quickly got out her license and registration. To her surprise, the officer that approached her window was a member of her own team. "Erica! What are you doing out this early?" Saipia asked as she handed her information to the jaguar.

"Heard you were on patrol duty and was thinking about joining you, but I hear you have one of the humans riding with you, today. Figured I'd get an early start. But why are you in such a hurry, Commander?" Erica asked, knowing one of her superiors would chew her out for not following procedure.

"Just a little irritated. Today hasn't started out very well," the blue wolf replied.

Erica punched a few buttons on her reader and was soon staring at Saipia's driving record. "Well, it says here that this would be your first speeding ticket. And I don't think I'm in the mood to give you one, today. But, you need to calm down. Maybe you should take a deep breath or two, maybe grab a bite to eat or some coffee before heading into the precinct. I don't want you having a heart attack or something."

Saipia sighed with relief at Erica's generosity. "Thank, you, Sergeant. I think I might just have to put you up for promotion for this."

"You don't have to do that. It was you, after all, that taught me to look for signs of stress and to not make things worse by passing on a ticket. And it was you that told me last year that sometimes a ticket can do more harm than good," Erica replied.

Saipia flashed the cat a thankful smile. "That is true. Thank you, again," she called as she slowly eased back into traffic and headed for the office.

Erica watched her boss and friend head off, drawing her partner for the day out of the patrol car. "You're just going to let her go?" he asked.

The jaguar gave a slight nod before returning to the car and getting back behind the wheel. "It was Commander Jones," she said.

"So?" the human officer asked.

"I'm not going to ruin her perfect driving record," Erica said firmly enough to end the conversation.

When Saipia saw that her partner for the day hadn't arrived yet, she quickly popped into her office were her second in command was busy going over that morning's stack of mail. "James, I'm going to be in the gym, letting off some steam."

"Alright. I'll let Timothy know when he gets here. But, you care to tell me what's got you so wound up today?" the maned wolf behind the desk asked as she looked up at her friend and commanding officer.

"There was a checkout on the boarder today," Sai replied.

"Ah. Yes. We all had to deal with that mess. In fact, the Commander called and had us make up a pass for you so you won't have to deal with it," said James.

"That means it's going to be there perminately. I guess I'll just have to find housing over here sooner than I thought," the wolf said with a sigh, her tail displaying her irritation at the situation.

"Speaking of, I hear there's a Genoid friendly apartment complex opening up not too far from here. Maybe you can check it out during lunch," James suggested.

Saipia shook her head. "Gjai wants me to have lunch with her today. I'll take a look at it this weekend. Thanks for the information, though." With that and a wave, the blue canine headed to the precinct's gym.

***

The commander had changed out of her uniform before heading to the gym. She never liked to get her uniforms any dirtier than she had to. Now in a pair of gray shorts and a matching gray sports bra, the Genoid officer practiced her boxing and martial arts on the precinct's punching bag. It wasn't very often she got to use her hand-to-hand skills in the field, so, practicing it in the gym was essential to her. More so than practicing her shooting. It was a half-an-hour before Timothy showed up. Saipia's ears alerted her to his arrival, but she decided to see how long it would take him to speak up. She was not all that pleased with the result or the sensation of his eyes roaming her body. After a swift round house kick, she stopped her assault on the swinging bag. "Is there something you need, Captain, or is the sight of my young, sweaty body enough for you?"

Timothy was taken aback and visually took a couple steps backward. "I'm sorry, Commander, I didn't mean to..." the older man said and Saipia laughed.

"Don't lie to me. You're a guy. It's not like you can help it. But, perhaps staring at a superior officer like she's a horny cheerleader isn't the way to increase your rank. And I'm more interested to know why you're so late," Saipia countered as she caught her breath and crossed her arms over her chest. Most Genoids didn't sweat, but Saipia was one of the exceptions.

The human was slightly irritated and the shifting expression on his face told the wolf of that. He had complained the loudest over Saipia's rank and that had gotten him assigned to this patrol duty with her. But, now, with her standing in front of him, questioning his lateness, and using a very commanding tone, he found himself unable to disobey her. "Sorry, Commander, traffic was..."

"Didn't I tell you not to lie to me?" spat Saipia as she wiped her face with a towel. "If you've truly lived her longer than I have, then you would know to accommodate for traffic. Even I know that. And traffic wasn't that bad today." Timothy glared at the commander as she finished what she was doing and put the towel on her shoulder. "Well, you going to tell me why you're late, or do I have to put you up for demotion?"

Timothy sighed. "I was nervous. First time pulling patrol with..."

Saipia laughed again. "Yeah. It's technically against the rules for a Genoid officer and a human officer to be on patrol together. But, don't worry, I'm the one who got that rule put into place. Knew an officer once who was continuously taken out and raped by her partner. We didn't even find out until her body was found in a park."

"I never heard of that case," Timothy replied.

"Yeah. It's not very well known. And there is a good reason for that. Maybe I'll tell you why, some other time. For now, why don't you go sign out the Challenger for our patrol while I take a quick shower and change into my uniform," said the blue canine.

"Yes, Commander," Timothy said with a salute. "But, why the Challenger?"

"I always use the Challenger when I do patrol," said Saipia as she headed towards the showers.

***

Being the superior officer, it was Saipia's decision of who got to drive the cruiser, and, as the two headed towards the classic 2009 Dodge Challenger dressed in stereotypical black and white cop car dressing, she tossed her keys to the human. Although, all the cars in the department were painted this way, the Challenger was originally not. Saipia had purchased it with her own money, and begged the chief to have it fitting with all the police gear, but he refused, so, Saipia paid for everything with the help of James.

"I was wondering what James when she said you had the keys," said the older officer.

"It's my car. Took me a while to find it, too. Especially in such good condition," said the wolf as she opened the passenger side door.

"Your car? That explains a lot. Nice way to spend your paycheck," said the human.

"Yeah. And I'm taking this thing when I retire. Now, just so you know, today we're going to be patrolling the black side of Genoid territory. Humans aren't all that welcome there, but as long as you're with me, you should be fine," warned the commander.

"Alright. Whatever you say, Commander," replied the human as he started up the old V8 and rolled the vehicle out of the police garage. He was tempted to question why she would have them patrol an area that could put him at risk, but he stopped himself. He was already in enough trouble with Saipia already.

"Don't worry, about it. I'll have your back," Saipia said as she rested her tail on her lap.

The drive was rather casual. As they approached the boarder between the Human side and Genoid side of the city, Saipia put her special sticker in the front window which got a salute from the soldiers on duty. "The boarder patrol has got to go. I don't care what it takes, either," the canine commented.

"Yeah, that seems rather harsh. I don't even know why they'd do that," Timothy agreed.

"Especially considering Liv's house in on the human side of the city. This discrimination thing is getting way out of hand," the commander said as she shifted in her seat.

Timothy took them by Saipia's house in time to see Gjai pulling out of the driveway. Saipia waved and smiled at her sister who returned the gesture. The two turned the corner and continued deeper into Genoid territory. The territory was surrounded by the human city on all sides but one. That way, they could leave the city without entering human territory. The side that wasn't blocked my the humans was also known as the Black Side, as the Genoids that lived there despised humans and avoided contact with them at all costs. Not even Liv captured anyone from there.

In that area, were several of the Genoids worst criminals combined with some of Saipia's closest friends. She had spent a few years in the Black Side while she went to college. As the old car entered the seemingly normal part of town, the wolf found herself smiling at the memories that started rushing back into her mind. "It's been a long time since I've been in this part of town," she commented aloud.

"You sound like you used to live here," Timothy replied.

Saipia nodded. "When I was in college, I didn't have much money. Unfortunately, the dorms for my kind were here. Fortunately, I had a pretty awesome roommate."

"That would be Erica, right?" the human asked.

Again, the wolf nodded. She began thinking of all the time Erica had saved her ass through the years. "That girl deserves a promotion. Now, that I think about it, I'm surprised that she's still a lieutenant. She should be a captain with all the 'above the call of duty' stuff she's done."

"Then promote her. You're her superior officer and ranked high enough to put her up for a nice big promotion.

"I might. But, I'm a little worried about Jack throwing a fit. Although, I guess..." Saipia thought about that potential situation for a moment. "I guess he'll just have to deal with it."

Timothy smiled at the Genoid as he slowly made his way through the streets of the Black Side of the city. Saipia had made up her mind about promoting Erica, and the human was impressed to see her shrugging off Jack's potential annoyance at being jumped.

Saipia glanced out the window, and saw a familiar lioness leaning against the side of a building. "Stop the car," she commanded. Tim did as he was told. "Stay here. I'm going to make our first arrest of the day."

Tim nodded, as Saipia stepped from the car. "Angelica, you know what the rules are," she told the cat who just smiled and laughed.

"You're going to arrest me, Saipia? I seem to remember you on this same corner trying to earn a little extra money," said Angelica, snapping her tail back and forth behind her.

"And I spent a few nights in jail before I even got a single john. I learned why not to be a hooker in jail, too," the blue wolf replied, causing Angelica to gasp in authentic surprise.

"I never knew you were raped while in prison," said the hooker.

"Yeah. I haven't told many people about that. But, it was the last time I had slept with another woman. And that doesn't change the fact that you're breaking the law," the younger wolf said.

"So, you're going to arrest me?" asked Angelica.

"Yes, I am. You know that prostitution is illegal, even in the Black Side," Saipia replied as she pulled her handcuffs out.

Reluctantly, Angelica didn't bother to resist, allowing the officer to handcuff her and lead her to the car. She was a little shocked to see Timothy in the driver's seat. "You brought a human into the Black Side? That's not very bright, Saipia."

"You know her?" Timothy asked.

"Yeah. She was a good friend in college. And, Angelica, you know enough of my past to know that he is perfectly safe in my care," remarked the blue wolf as she got back into the car.

"Yes, but he's human, Sai. There are plenty of Genoids here that won't hesitate to kill him on site," the yellow cat protested.

Saipia sighed and looked at her partner for the day. "Yeah. I'll be earning my star today."

"That's right, you got promoted. Congratulations," Angelica said, her voice filled with fear and concern.

"Thanks, Angelica. And don't get your tail in a knot. You both are going to be fine. No one is going to get killed," reassured the commander with a hefty amount of irritation in her voice.

"As long as you know what you're getting yourself into," said the lioness.

After a brief moment of thinking about the prisoner's words, Saipia pulled out her pistol and made sure it was ready to fire. She also checked the supply of Static Pulse Grenades that were tucked in her breast pocket. She always brought them with her, just in case she needed them.

For the next half hour, the three wandered through the streets. They were about to head to a different part of town when Saipia caught sight of her oldest brother Peter buying drugs from a dealer. "What the hell?" she exclaimed, causing Timothy to instantly stop the car. "PETER!"

The black wolf turned towards his rapidly approaching sister. Again, Timothy sat in the car, this time, with Angelica keeping him company and safe. Peter thought about running for a moment, but when Saipia pulled out one of her SPGs, he decided against it. "Um...I can explain..." he started.

"Really? You can explain why you're buying pot from a junkie?" spat the blue wolf.

"Umm..." Peter stalled while trying to think of a good excuse.

"You are an idiot. Peter, I'm a cop. You think that I'm just going to let you off because you're my brother?" the shorter Genoid asked.

Peter visibly sunk at that question. He was busted and he knew what she was about to do. "No, ma'am. I would fully expect you to arrest me."

"I'm glad you know what's about to happen. Ryan isn't buying drugs, too, is he?" demanded Saipia as she used up her last pair of cuffs on her sibing.

"Ryan doesn't even know I'm doing it. He'd be pissed if he found out," Peter answered as they headed back to the car.

That's when Saipia noticed her car was completely empty. "Damn it! Peter, stay here and watch the car. If I come back and you're gone, I swear you'll be spending the next few years behind bars. And you know very well that I'd do it. I know where you live and all of your hideouts. Running would be more stupid than buying and smoking pot." With that, Saipia drew her pistol and hurried past the car and across the wide street.

She got only a few feet before she stopped and ran back to the car. Throwing open the driver's side door, Saipia sniffed Timothy's seat and steering wheel. Peter watched this and laughed. "Damn dog!" he shouted.

Saipia tossed him a stern look. "Stay, boy," she ordered, drawing another laugh from the older black wolf.

With Timothy's scent fresh in her nose, Saipia charged off after him. It didn't take long before Saipia's nose picked up the scents of Timothy's kidnappers. She also smelt Angelica with them. The scent of the lioness' blood tickled her powerful nose, as well. This only sought to quicken her pace.

Soon, she came to a clearing down a deep alleyway. The shadows more than hid her form. She just hoped none of the criminals had their native night vision like she did. Peering around the corner, she saw Timothy on his knees in front of big male dingo with a pistol in his hand. She recognized the dingo from college and she knew he was dangerous. On the ground behind Tim, was Angelica, her shirt and skirt in tatters, and barely covered her more human parts.

The dingo held the big gun with both hands. In addition to the dingo, there were six other Genoids of various species. A horse of some sort moved towards the still handcuffed Angelica. That was all the information Sai needed to assess. "Hollywood PD, put down the gun!" she shouted, distracting the dingo a moment.

The villain laughed a moment, smelling only a single officer, and lowered the .50 caliber pistol towards the human. Saipia's pistol unleashed a round and it easily cut through both of the Australian's hands, forcing him to drop the large gun with a scream. "I told you to drop the gun, Collin," Saipia said.

"Saipia!" the horse exclaimed and quickly backed away from Angelica. Everyone in the alley was a surprised to see the blue wolf.

"You all are a long way from the Colony. I suggest you get on the next bus back there," ordered Saipia and watched as all the criminals except Collin hurried out of the alley as if they had seen a ghost.

"Damn! I thought I killed you," the dingo said in his thick accent.

"Well, obviously, you didn't. If you think that I could ever be killed be a bastard such as yourself, think again. Liv won't even kill me," the blue wolf said aiming her pistol right at Collin's head.

"Liv is a fool. There is another that is ten times worse that she is. I'm sure he's heard of you by now. He'll stop at nothing to see you dead, Saipia," replied the Aussie.

"He can certainly try. But, I'm out to bring peace to our people, and I'm not about to be killed by those I'm trying to protect," Saipia replied while Timothy found his radio and called for backup.

***

Saipia entered the interrogation room where her brother sat. The disapproving look she gave him was more indicative of an older sibling, but that only made it worse. "What am I going to do with you, Peter?" asked the blue wolf.

"I'm really sorry, Sai," Peter pleaded.

"Don't 'Sai' me. Right now, I'm not only your little sister, but a cop, as well. What were you even thinking?" Saipia was furious.

"I don't know. It makes me feel..." Peter started.

"It's pot, Pete, of course it's going to make you feel good. But, it effects your judgement and could end up killing you," the commander shouted. "You know Ryan's going to find out, and probably Gjai. I'm sure one of them will tell Mom and Dad. What do you think they'll say?"

Peter said nothing. He just sat at the steel table with an apologetic look on his face. "I don't suppose there's anyway to get out of jail time."

"Hell no. You're lucky enough I don't issue you the maximum sentence. But, you might be able to get my good graces again by giving me the name of your seller. I'm also going to strongly encourage the judge to make you attend drug rehab," spat Saipia.

The black wolf nodded in agreement as Saipia stood to her feet again. "You can give your seller's name to Captain Rosewood. I have to talk briefly with James and the chief before heading out to lunch with Gjia."

Again, Peter nodded obediently as Saipia left the room. She wondered over to her office where James still sat. Now, she was filling out a case report. Glancing up at Saipia, she smiled. "I heard you went down to the Black Side today."

"Yeah. Figured it was a good place to meet my quota," said the blue canine.

"I'm sure it is, but there are a lot of people there that know your little secret. And you ran into two of them. Plus, you violated your restraining order that Collin has against you," replied the acting commander.

"Only because he was going to kill my partner and then do God-knows-what to Angelica," Saipia countered. "And you're the one who filed that restraining order. Collin thought I was dead."

"And you're lucky you were on duty at the time, or I'd have to write you up. But, my dear, you need to stay out of the Dark Side for now. Not only are there plenty of Genoid who know your little secret over there, but there are also a lot of people who would love to kill you," scolded the older canine.

Saipia sighed. "Yes, ma'am."

James smiled at that. "Anyway, Gjai called and we're supposed to meet her for lunch in about ten minutes."

"Oh. You're coming with us?" Saipia asked as she stood from her seat.

"Yes, I am. And what's this about you wanting to promote Erica," James questioned as she opened the door to the office.

"Not wanting to, I AM going to promote her. She's always going above and beyond and she's saved all of our asses more than I can count. And if Jack doesn't like being outranked by all the women on the team, that's his problem," Saipia replied as the two officer moved through the precinct.

"Although, he's getting closer and closer to a promotion, as well," James replied.

"That's true. If he doesn't somehow get me pregnant before then," the blue wolf replied as she held open the main doors for her friend.

"If that happens, it would be you're fault, Sai," the maned wolf replied.
