Guardian Angels

Last Time:

After chewing out Erica for getting crappy prosthetic parts and not getting her month checkups, Saipia and James went to a high school on the Genoid/Human boarder where a mother reported her daughter going missing. When they uncovered not only the body of the woman's daughter, but two other Genoid students, as well, Saipia makes a bold decision to go undercover in hopes of finding the killer. However, Saipia realizes that she enjoys being a teacher and is a little upset when the killers show themselves the very first day of the stakeout. Now, with the perps in custody, Erica has an appointment with an old friend of Saipia's to get her shotty prosthetics replaced with better and cheaper versions.

Episode 12: "Dirty"

Erica sat patiently in her seat as Linda tapped a few buttons on her prosthetic arm. "I don't know who gave you this arm, Erica, but they shouldn't be allowed to make prosthetics," commented the human doctor as an audible grown sounded from the robotic arm. "Alright, I guess I'll have to do this the hard way."

"What's the hard way?" the leopard asked.

"Are her prosthetics not coming off?" Saipia asked as she stepped out of her office.

"Almost seems like they've fused with her real body parts," commented Jimmy.

"Let's hope not. If I have to do surgery to remove her prosthetic parts, I WILL be billing the people who gave her the parts in the first place. Trust me, I've had to do it before," Linda replied.

"Just try not to stain the carpet, please," James commented as Linda pulled out one of her special tools.

The doctor placed the device over the original control panel. "This might hurt slightly," she warned as she tapped in a couple buttons. There was a surge of power that caused Erica to jump in pain. Everything that was keeping the fake arm attached finally released and it detached without any more effort. "There we go. That wasn't that bad."

"Not that bad? That hurt like hell!" retorted Erica.

"Oh quit your whining. Besides, if you had come to me in the first place, I wouldn't have had to do that. That goes for all of you. I'm a firm supporter of the local law enforcement and if you ever need any prosthetics I can make them for you at a discount. Hell, I'm doing Erica's for free," the human woman said.

"But how can you afford to do that?" Jimmy asked.

"She makes all her own parts. Which is great because, they're better quality and a better fit. Plus she can make them to suit the job," Saipia replied.

"That discount carries over to family, right?" asked the chief as he wandered out of his office to join the growing crowd around the leopard.

"Most certainly. I've done prosthetics for Saipia's sister and brothers several times," Linda replied as she retrieved Erica's new arm from a duffel bag.

"Gjai has prosthetics?" James asked.

"Yes, she does. But it's a long, unpleasant story," replied the blue wolf.

Gently, Linda examined the platform that had been built into the bone and flesh of what was left of the original limb. "Figures that even the platform would be crappy. You're lucky I always come prepared."

Saipia laughed. "You know she doesn't like you, right?"

"Oh really? Well, I think she'll get used to me seeing as I'll be popping over to check on her every week from now on," Linda commented.

"Every week?" shouted Erica.

"Yes. It's going to take me a month to undo the damage those idiots did and then it'll take another month to make sure your body accepts my parts and to fine tune those parts so they're operating at peak performance. Then, since you had to get your intestines replaced because of an infection, I have to make sure that infection doesn't come back. Which, speaking of, you need to come into my little clinic tomorrow for surgery. I need to make sure the crappy plastic crap they gave you isn't causing the infection to spread. This is the major reason I want you guys to come to me. Not only am I an expert in prosthetics, I'm also a licensed doctor. It's called a medical engineer people," she commented as she worked on removing the old platform.

Erica glanced irritably in Saipia's direction as if the whole thing was her fault. "Don't give me that look. If you had gone to your monthly check ups you'd only be getting that arm today. And Linda isn't that bad," the blue canine said.

Linda finally detached the old platform from the flesh and bone that was behind it, causing Erica to wince in pain. "That hurt? It shouldn't have. I always kill the nerve endings attached to the platform just in case I need to replace it."

"Well, won't the process of removing those pain receptors hurt like hell?" the leopard asked.

The doctor sighed as she tapped some buttons on her hand built platform, preparing it to attach itself to the Genoid's flesh and bone. "Not really. Normally, it would, but my ways are different. I need those nerves and things to program and power the arm. So, I just program the platform to simply turn off the pain receptors without killing them completely. It's more like the pain is dulled to the point where it doesn't bother you." The old woman took hold of the stump and gripped it rather firmly. Gently, she set the platform against the open wound. There was a slew of mechanical whines and groans as the computer in the platform prepared the arm and itself to receive the artfully constructed arm. "Alright, here we go. This should, if all my information is correct, fit you quite nicely. I might have to do a couple tweaks to it, but it should be pretty close."

With that, Dr. Linda Summers connected the fake limb with the platform. After making sure it was secure and everything was correct, she opened a small panel on the wrist and turned the limb on. Erica gasped at the tingling sensation that shot down the arm, but was thoroughly impressed that she was able to move it like she used to do with her real arm. The spots and everything matched to the point where she knew she would forget she even had a fake arm eventually. Just like she forgot her left eye was fake until Linda promptly plucked it out, carefully detaching the cables. Linda then pulled out a baggy from the pocket of her white lab coat that held a brand new eye.

After installing the new eye, Linda dropped the old on in the baggy and stuffed in back in the bag. "There. That eye should enhance your site quite a bit. I added X-ray, thermal and telescopic settings for it, as well. And I checked your leg last week and it seemed to be fine. I think I'll make some adjustments, to it tomorrow, though. Does it feel alright?"

"Umm...it's been a little stiff and sore since the armored suit, but I've managed it," Erica replied bluntly, as she played around with her new eye and arm.

"Yeah. I hadn't anticipated that scenario. I'll definitely want to see what damage that did. Luckily for all of you, I'm taking over the construction of the new suits for you guys. That way I can make sure they work with your prosthetics without damaging your real flesh and bones and the work I've done," Linda commented with a troubled look on her face.

"Well, it'll be a while before we use those armored suits again," Saipia replied with a bright smile.

"Hey, Angels, the academy is sending over a bunch of new recruits tomorrow including a bunch of Genoids, which I'm sending your way. I want you to show them the ropes. Take 'em on patrol or something. But keep them safe," the chief announced.

"Alright. How many are we getting?" the blue wolf asked as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"Ten, I believe," replied the old man.

"You going to take use the Challenger?" Jimmy asked.

James huffed at that. "Hell no," Saipia answered.

"I could have told you that. Saipia bought that car with her own money," James added.

"I did buy it with my own money, and there's no way I'm letting a bunch of rookies ride in it. I'll just use one of the police vans. That way I can take more of them. I'll let the rest of you fight over what's left. However, Erica, you are on medical suspension until Linda clears you. And don't think you can pull one over on me, my dear friend. I'm not letting you come back until Linda herself says you can, is that understood?" Saipia explained.

Erica looked away from her boss and folded her arms over her chest. "Whatever," she commented.

"Hey, just think, it'll give you some time to better your racing skills on your game and maybe work on that hot rod you've been working on," Saipia reassured.

"It's not a hot rod, it's a roadster. And I can beat you on that game any day," challenged the leopard.

Saipia smiled. "Maybe I'll swing by this week and we can see about that. But for now, why don't you go home and get some rest."

Erica nodded with a smile. "I could use it. The dog kept me up late last night," the feline said as she got to her feet and headed towards the door.

"Erica owns a dog?" Jimmy asked.

Saipia laughed. "She always has. Ever since I've known her. Although, the one she had in college ended up being more trouble than it was worth. I suspect, however, her love of dogs is why she was always hitting on Genoid canines in college and beyond."

"So, she loves you because she loves dogs?" questioned the chief.

"Yes. I don't mind it, though. The sex is pretty awesome," said the blue wolf.

James laughed while Jimmy and Henry just smiled and shook their heads. "Jack should be back in a couple weeks. And hopefully it won't take long for Erica to get back to work," the chief replied.

"Yeah. Erica loves a cop. Always wanted to be one, and when she got hired, she was simply ecstatic. Not sure how I feel about Jack returning, though. We'll see how well behaved he is," Saipia commented with a sigh.

"If he hasn't gone off and gotten himself killed or something in the meantime. You know, Sai, he really doesn't strike me as your type," James retorted.

Saipia thought about that statement for a moment. The hyena had changed a lot since she first met him. She couldn't put her finger on why, though. Perhaps it was simply because he loved her and hearing about her sleeping with Erica all the time was beginning to wear on him. "He used to be. But, perhaps, he's not anymore. But, I know he still loves me. And somewhere inside me I feel the same way. I mean, when we were in Vegas together..." the blue wolf sighed away her frustration at that situation. "You two going to be alright with the new recruits tomorrow?"

"They shouldn't be that much of an issue," Jimmy acknowledged as he took a seat at his desk.

"Don't act like a newbie yourself, Jimmy. These kids maybe fresh out of the academy, but, to get stuck with us, they aren't push overs. You'll be earning your money this week," the maned wolf commented.

Saipia sat in her office casually going over the files on the new recruits she was receiving. All of them had great marks on their records. All but one. Trevor Tane was a wolverine with a bit of an attitude problem. He passed all his classes with flying colors, but he still lacked discipline. Saipia wagered that the chief has chosen Trevor so she could work in some discipline. The other two Saipia would be taking with her on patrol were a female African wild dog named Torassa and a male red wolf named Gary Orton. Both canines had some interesting notes in their files that the blue wolf wanted to experience for herself.

Torassa, or Tora for short, was one of the few native African Genoids. She was lucky, however, for she had no mutations from her transformation. Someone had found a lot of money and a great operator and had combined her human self with that of a African Wild Dog. Instantly, she changed her named to that of the Wild Dog's. Unique in being one of the few first generation Genoids still being made, her body was only a decade old. Saipia, suspected that the transformation wasn't entirely her idea, but she was making the most of it.

Gary had travels a long way to be with the HPD, as well. A native of Augusta, Georgia, Gary had looked all over the country for a law school that would accept him. Upon finding one, he studied hard, often forgoing parties and girls. Apparently, the red wolf had witnessed not only his parent's deaths but also the deaths of their original pack. Red wolves were still on the endangered species list and even making one into a Genoid could be considered a federal offense, but the damage was done. Gary finished top in his class and with knowledge of just how harsh the real world was, Saipia was curious to see how he would do in the field.

Now, with all the newbies divided up, Saipia read over the lengthy files on her group a few more times. She had made sure to look like she was indeed the boss. From the cap to the shiny silver star on her lapel, everything about her that day gave off an air of authority. She would be keeping a stern eye on these recruits and making sure they'll make great cops.

The normally open door to her office was shut tight, to encourage the recruits to knock. And finally, one of them did. "Come in," she called.

Slowly, Torassa slid the door open and swallowed her fear as she looked over the large office, clean desk and the blue wolf that say on a big leather chair behind it. The wild dog's eyes quickly fell on the silver star on Saipia's shoulders. "C-Commander," she stuttered and Saipia was quickly impressed with how well she spoke English.

"Yes, ma'am?" Saipia asked as she scanned over the dog before her in a fresh uniform and a police hat in her hands.

"I'm O-Officer T-T-Torassa. One of the new recruits. I was told to report to...you," Saipia could tell the woman was nervous, but the smile she gave Tora did a lot to alleviate the tension.

"Excellent! Are Trevor and Gary here, as well?" Saipia asked as she stood to her feet.

"Yes, ma'am," nodded the taller canine.

"Good. Then we can start. Why don't we step out of my office and meet the other two. I have a couple questions for you all before we start the patrol," Saipia said as she opened the door to her office and let the wild dog exit before following her.

Amongst the desks, Saipia noticed that Jimmy, James and Bryan were all missing, and figured they'd already gotten started with their new recruits on what ever task they had planned. The commander also noticed the two male Genoids leaning against Erica's desk and waiting quietly for the two women to exit. Saipia quickly sized them up. She quickly caught both of them glancing over her form, but Trevor's gaze definitely lingered a little bit longer than she was comfortable with. In fact, she could feel him constantly looking her over and it was beginning to make her a little uncomfortable. "Is there something I can help you with, Officer Tane?" she asked after a moment.

"Aren't you a little young to be a full fledged commander?" he retorted with a wicked smirk.

"I'm older than I look. And I'm one of the best cops here. But, it really doesn't matter. I'm your superior officer, and it would behoove you to stop looking at me like I'm a twenty dollar whore," Saipia replied.

"Nah. I'd pay at least a hundred bucks for ya," Trevor joked and laughed too himself a moment but cut himself short when he noticed a lot of eyes staring incredulously at him.

"You keep that crap up, you'll be fired before you can start. Now, I just have a couple questions for the rest of you before we do get started. Firstly, Tora, do you speak any languages other than English?" Saipia commented.

"Yes, ma'am. I speak five other languages. All of them are dialects from Africa," answered Tora honestly.

"Good. I know a lot of places around town where that skill will be quite useful. Now, Gary, you have a lot of high marks in your file and I fully understand why you want to become a cop, but being a cop doesn't mean revenge for something that happened when you were a kid," said Saipia.

"I know, ma'am. And, although I would love to see those bastards thrown in jail, I'm here to prevent what happened to me from happening to other people and Genoids. And it is an honor to be in your presence, Commander," replied the shorter red wolf.

Saipia nodded and turned towards the wild dog. "And why do you want to be a cop?"

"As a first generation Genoid, I've experienced discrimination on both sides and to be honest, when I was human, I hated Genoids. Now, however, now that I am one, I have a great appreciation for our kind and any discrimination we receive is completely unwarranted," Tora replied.

"Alright. And what about you, Mr. Tane? Why did you decide to become a cop?" Saipia questioned, fully expecting the immature answer that was about to come.

"I needed the money, and it sounded like a lot of fun," answered the wolverine.

"This job can be enjoyable at times, but, if you're in it for the money, you're in it for the wrong reasons. I'll definitely have to keep my eye on you," said the wolf. "Now, today, we're going to go on a simple patrol. I'm a firm believer in learning in the field. I know A couple of you have had high marks in your classes, but what goes on in class and what really happens are two completely different things. While we are out, you will get all your orders from me, as you normally would. Even as rookies, you represent this department and my team, so I expect you to be on your best behavior. And just so you know, I am considering hiring more Angels. I can't seem to keep all the ones I have healthy, and we need all the help we can get. However, the chief has agreed to only allow me up to four new Angels out of ten recruits. Everyone one of you is going to be evaluated by the current members of my team and I will then take their opinions into consideration and make my final choices. Now, my third in command is stuck at home, at the moment getting some prosthetic work done, so, at some point you'll have to go help her out with whatever she needs.

"As for now, Tora, would you get the keys for the van? I've already signed one out and Mr. Staton is waiting to give someone the keys," Saipia explained.

"Yes, ma'am," agreed the African Wild Dog, eager to please Saipia and earn a spot on G.U.E.S.T. Quickly, she hurried over to the evidence locker that also housed the keys to the department vehicles.

As she ran back to the group, Saipia smiled warmly at the new recruits. "Alright, let's get going. I'll let Tora drive first and you'll take turns every hour. So, let's get going. There's a big city to cover and crime doesn't wait."

With that, the four walked out to the garage and got into one of the vans. Casually, they pulled out of the parking lot and began their patrols while Saipia quizzed them on standard operating procedure for patrols. She was thoroughly impressed with all of them, even Trevor got all of his answers right. Saipia loved teaching and was thoroughly enjoying quizzing the new recruits when they spotted an illegal sale going on. But what made what they witnessed unusual was it was a couple Genoids selling a woman in broad daylight. Tora was the one that spotted it first and quickly stopped the van. "A slave sale in broad daylight screams of a trap. I think there's far more going on there than what we see," she commented.

"Right. However, any information we gather on the crime rings is a plus. So, I think it's time to put you guys to the test," replied Saipia as she put her cap on.

Tora nodded with a smile and pulled over. As the four cops got out and wandered over to the criminals, Trevor lingered behind a bit, but Saipia made sure to keep at least an ear on him. As they approached, the blue wolf let Torassa take the lead. "Excuse me, gentlemen, but we couldn't help but notice you trying to sell someone in the middle of the day."

"Sell her? You cops are higher than we are," said one of the two dogs.

"Oh, so you're high, huh? Isn't that a felony, Commander?" Tora asked her boss.

"Yes, it is, Officer. Not a good thing to admit to a group of cops," replied the blue wolf.

"Dude, it's Saipia Jones, that stupid Genoid dyke cop bitch," said the other dog to his associate.

"Excuse you, boys. I'm bisexual, not lesbian and I'm standing right here. Perhaps you shouldn't try to piss me off," Saipia scolded.

"Whatever. I heard you was a gay bitch. And we weren't selling her. She's our boss," said the fat canine.

"That's right. Glad you could make it, Miss Jones. Although, I'm not sure if your little group here is right, but it doesn't matter. One dead Genoid cop is as good as another. As long as your dead," said the redhead who singled to her gang by simply turning around and walking off.

As soon as the human turned around, there was instantly a hail of gunfire and the cops scrambled behind various objects. "Now, this is what you call an ambush," shouted Saipia.

"And if I'm not mistaken, SOP for this situation would be to kill everyone but one for interrogation," commented Gary.

"Screw that. We'll interrogate the bitch when we find her. You have my permission to eliminate the threat," retorted Saipia as Tora fired off a couple rounds from her pistol, killing one of the gunmen.

There was relative silence from the cops as they quickly and skillfully took care of all the shooters. Gary, Saipia and Tora cautiously left the safety of their hiding spots. "Dammit!" muttered the commander. "And where the hell did Trevor go?"

"I don't know, ma'am," muttered Gary as he limped a long, a bullet hole in his left leg and right shoulder.

"Hold on, Gary, you need to get back to the van and call an ambulance and backup. You're of no use to us moving forward," ordered Saipia.

"Right. You two take care of yourselves," acknowledged the red wolf and he turned around and headed back towards the van.

Meanwhile, Saipia and Tora made their way towards the warehouses to make sure everything was clear. "I heard that you weren't very popular around town, but I thought that was just amongst the humans," commented the wild dog.

"Yeah. War has less logic than love," replied the blue wolf as they approached the doors of the largest of the warehouses.

As soon as they opened the door, a large metal pipe came crashing down against Tora's head, knocking her out. Saipia quickly shot the culprit and checked on her younger canine. "Damn. That's going to require more prosthetic work. The chief won't like that," she muttered.

"Don't worry, you won't be seeing him again," remarked a familiar voice. The commander turned to see Trevor standing in another doorway not too far away. "By my count you don't have enough ammo to kill everyone here. But I must thank you. Apparently, there are a lot of Genoids and humans alike that will pay quite a lot for you, my dear Commander. It was sheer luck that I got stationed under you, though."

"You dirty bastard, I'm going to kick your ass, for this," Saipia shouted as a plethora of bad guys with all kinds of weaponry stepped from the shadows to surround her while others dragged Tora's body away to do whatever they wanted to her.

"I seriously doubt it. Have fun, guys," Trevor replied and walked out of the warehouse.

"You're even prettier than I imagined," commented one of the Genoids surrounding her.

"Beauty can kill," retorted the wolf.

Trevor sat smuggly at Erica's desk as James stepped from Saipia's office. "Mr. Tane, it would appear you have arrived back here alone. May I inquire as to where the Commander and the others are?" she asked as she glanced around the office.

"They're still out on patrol. I was just a little bored and asked to be dropped off," answered the wolverine.

That answer was completely off and James knew it. She knew something was wrong and that he was dirty, but figured Saipia would take care of it when she got back. She wasn't expecting to see Erica enter the offices. "Where's Saipia?" asked the leopard quickly.

"Damn, you're even hotter than the wolf," commented Trevor.

That caught Erica off guard a moment. But she quickly shrugged it off. "Whatever. Saipia's ten time hotter than I am. But it doesn't answer my question."

"Why the hell are you even here, Erica. Saipia gave you specific instructions to stay home until Dr. Summers cleared you," said James.

"I know, but I was going to take her out to dinner tonight," replied the feline, 'causing the maned wolf to laugh.

Trevor didn't like the sound of that statement. "Wait, you're dating the commander? Isn't that against regulations."

"Yeah, but so is having an all Genoid squad," countered Erica.

It was then that Saipia stormed through the doors of the elevator. When she saw Erica she temporarily shifted her anger towards her. "Ericina Notalin Martin, what the hell are you doing here?"

"Dammit! You know I hate it when you use my real name. And if you must know, I came here to take you out to dinner. Notice I'm not in my uniform," spat Erica.

Accepting that answer, Saipia turned towards Trevor who was frozen in fear. He slowly turned his head towards the wolf to see her normally bright blue fur tented red with blood, her uniform ruined. Before he could do anything, she grabbed him by the collar and picked him up from his seat. "You stupid, dirty, son of a bitch! If you knew who and what I am, you never would have tried something so stupid!" To emphasis her words, she punched him squarely in the jaw as hard as she could. "Throwing you in jail would be too kind for you. I should think of a way to cause you the most pain possible without killing you, but my job doesn't allow me to do that. However, before I do throw your sorry ass in jail, I AM going to make an example out of you. Since you are still an officer, I want you to meet me in the hand-to-hand combat training facility in five minutes. And Erica, I want you there, as well."

James and Erica sighed as Saipia made a bee-line for the showers. "What in the world did you do?" the leopard questioned. "Actually, I'm probably better off not knowing. Now, come on. Let's get going."

By the time handcuffs were finally put around Trevor's wrists, his body was bruised and battered with a broken bone here and there. Saipia made Erica join them because she would stop her from killing him, but let her beat him up more. Saipia wasn't even breathing hard as a couple of human officers led the wolverine away. "What did he actually do?" Erica asked, her curiosity getting the best of her.

"He tried to sell Tora and I as sex slaves. Of course, the people he sold us to didn't really care if we were breathing or not. Gary's in the hospital with several bullet holes in him. Tora almost died and is going to need a lot of prosthetic work done and I know need a new uniform, among other things," replied the wolf.

"Sounds like a fancy dinner is out of the question tonight. How about we grab some pizza and maybe watch a movie or play a video game or two?" asked Erica as she looked her superior officer over.

"How about you go home and grab that muscle car of yours and swing by my place in a couple hours and we can go grab a burger and go for a nice relaxing cruise. Maybe we can even go for a walk along the beach or something," Saipia replied.

Erica smiled at that suggestion. "Sounds like fun. I'll meet you in a couple hours, then."

And that night, as the two Genoids rumbled over a nice stretch of winding road with the top down on Erica's old muscle car, Saipia closed her eyes and let the refreshing desert air cleanse her of the negative thoughts and events of the day. She enjoyed the wind in her mane and the company of a good friend. At that moment, she wasn't a cop and there was no discrimination. Her past wasn't nearly as horrible as it was and everything was perfect. In that moment, she was in paradise, if only for a moment.
